““You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭3:4-6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

    Through the Word notes—
    (Pastor Sandy Adams)

    The temptations Satan uses:

lust of the flesh— You can feel great
lust of the eyes—You can look great
the pride of life—You can be great.

    * I think this is the passage Damien discussed this morning.

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
    For everything in the world—
    the lust of the flesh,
the lust of the eyes, and
    the pride of life—
comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”
    ‭‭1 John‬ ‭2:15-17‬ ‭NIV‬

    Enduring Word commentary :
    (2018 David Guzik)

    a. So when the woman saw: Eve surrendered to this temptation in exactly the way John describes in 1 John 2:16. First, she gave in to the lust of the flesh (saw that it was good for food), then she gave in to the lust of the eyes (pleasant to the eyes), then she gave in to the pride of life (desirable to make one wise).

“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:26-27‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

    The Bible Project notes:

    We were made to be:
    1. Reflections of God’s character
    2. Representative of God’s rule

    Psalm 8:1-9
    1 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
    You have set your glory
    in the heavens.

2 Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.

3 When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,

4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

5 You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.

    6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:

    7 all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,

8 the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

    9 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

2:16 God says, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil…”

3:1 “Now the serpent said to the woman, “Did God really say, “You must not eat from any tree in the garden?”

That is the opposite of what God said to Adam and Eve. Satan twists God’s word around and tries to get them and us to question God’s character and His goodness.

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.””
    Genesis 3:15

** This is our first hint at the coming Messiah. I love to look for Jesus in the Old Testament.
God was not caught off guard when Eve & Adam sinned. He wasn’t wringing His hands and saying, “Oh no! What am I going to do now?”

He is outside of time. He knows our choices, even before we make them. He knows every word on our tongue before we say it (Psalm 139).

God already had a plan to send His son to pay our debt and redeem us! Thank you LORD!

Ok, here’s some thing I caught and need clarification on. In Genesis 1:27- it states that God had already created man BOTH male and female. However, in Genesis 2:20-23 it states that Adam had no helper and so God created Eve from his rib. Someone please make it make sense! What??🤔

Brandy, chapter 1 is the first telling and chapter 2 goes back and gives details. It’s the same events, but just more details.

How are we made in the image of God?

I love how in my Bible (The Study Bible for Women-CSB in case anyone is interested) it goes into Four key commonalities that God created within us to reflect His nature! I’ll list them below.

    1) Moral- He created us with an innate sense of right and wrong, as well as accountability.

    2) Spiritual-He created within each of us, a soul that outlasts our physical form after our death.

    3) Mental- He created within us the mental acumen for abstract reasoning and logic, as well as the advanced capability of planning for our futures. Something no other creature can possess.

    4) Relational- His reflection of love and desire for relationship with us is also within us as we relate to others in regards to marriage and other interpersonal relationships.

These 4 unique characteristics have been interwoven in each of us as reflections of His nature. I know it’s obvious that as humans we have these but God saw FIT for us to have these specifically to be more like Him. They are also things we take for granted.

Yes Brandy about what Paula said… I like to think about Chapter 2 like it is zooming in to look at the details.

“Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.”
    ‭‭Gen.‬ ‭13:12-13‬ ‭

    * Lot pitched his tents near Sodom, a city of great wickedness; it seems he got too chummy with the world.

“I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.
My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.”
    John 17: 14-16

“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
    1 Peter 2:11-12

“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”
    Proverbs 13:20

“Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭14:18-20‬

    TTW notes:

    * Melchizedek— King of Salem means King of Peace

*Melchizedek was priest of God Most High.

    * He was both priest and king. Melchizedek is the only one in the Bible who can serve as post priest and king, except Jesus.

    * Melchizedek brought out bread & wine. (Think of communion)

    * His name means King of Righteousness.

    * Abraham gave him a tithe, a biblical standard for giving to God.

    * A priest is someone who connects people with God. Melchizedek is the first priest spoken about in the Bible.

    * Most scholars agree that Melchizedek is a picture of Jesus, but some scholars believe it is Jesus.

1 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him,

2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.”

3 Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.
    Hebrews 7:1-4

    * Hebrews says Melchizedek is without genealogy, without father or mother,

    * is without beginning of days or end of life

    * resembling the Son of God

    * he remains a priest forever.

I’m only one day behind on this and will try to be caught up today or tomorrow. I’m finding reading a little each day on schedule is, by far, the best way to do this. As Pastor Ben said yesterday, it really doesn’t take long at all.

I’ll say from the first week’s readings, it really hit home to me that God punishes sin. Thank goodness He does, as He knows what’s best for us. As a typical sheep of a person, I need a shepherd to keep me in line. Thank goodness God does this for me. Reading the first quarter of Genesis has been good motivation to try to do the right thing even in little areas through my day.
